چکیده

Expectorated sputum and secretions aspirated through the bronchoscope frequently contain contaminants from the oral cavity.1 Because of this, it has not been possible often to accurately determine the cytology of the tracheobronchial tree in normal or diseased patients. Carabelli2 after studying secretions obtained by bronchoscopic aspiration reported that they normally contained ciliated columnar, goblet, undifferentiated bronchial, and squamous cells in addition to macrophages. He attributed blood elements to trauma, and did not consider them a part of the normal cytogram. Moreover, he believed that squamous cells probably represented elements which had been aspirated deep into the bronchial tree, presumably from the supraglottic region. For this reason little importance was attributed to their presence. In suppurative bronchopneumonitis he found leukocytes prominent and predominating. It has been our experience1 that under both normal and pathological conditions, in the absence of instrumentation, oral contents are rarely aspirated into the tracheobronchial tree.

Diagnostic Utility and Efficacy of Conventional versus SurePath® Liquid-based Cytology in Head and Neck Pathology: A Study in an Indian Tertiary Care Hospital

Background and Objective: Liquid-based cytology (LBC) is an emerging pathological method  for better  establishment of the diagnosis in almost all the organs of the body. It is currently used both for the gynecological and non-gynecological (fine-needle aspirates (FNAs)/fluid) specimens in most of the developed and few developing countries. The current study aimed at a...

Tracheobronchial Brush Cytology and Bronchoalveolar Lavage in Dogs and Cats with Chronic Cough: 45 Cases (2012–2014)

BACKGROUND Animals with chronic cough can have normal bronchoalveolar lavage fluid cytology when small airway disease is absent. Cytology of a tracheobronchial brushing can detect inflammation in larger airways; however, evaluation of this technique has been limited in veterinary medicine. OBJECTIVE To compare airway brush cytology to bronchoalveolar lavage fluid analysis in dogs and cats wit...

Pulmonary fibrosis associated with tracheobronchial aspiration. A study of the frequency of hiatal hernia and gastroesophageal reflux in interstitial pulmonary fibrosis of obscure etiology.

Tracheobronchial aspiration of gastric secretions has been suggested in published reports as a possible cause for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Forty-eight of 131 patients with roentgenographic evidence of pulmonary fibrosis had no established etiologic diagnosis after individualized evaluations. They were prospectively studied by upper gastrointestinal series to determine the incidence of gas...

The Effects of Cholestasis and Cirrhosis on Gastric Acid and Pepsin Secretions in Rat: Involvement of Nitric Oxide

Objective(s) The liver has major role in the organism homeostasis, interactions with other systems, synthesis and metabolism of bile production, drug detoxification and hormone inactivation. Cholestasis can be defined as an impairment of the bile flow which can lead to hepatocytes necrosis and finally cirrhosis. Some studies reported a gastric acid secretion reduction in cirrhotic subjects, wh...

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology of Intraocular, Orbital and Eyelid Lesions

Background: Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) is used for diagnosis of intraocular, orbital and eyelid lesions. In this study we evaluated the outcome and the accuracy of using this technique in diagnosis of benign or malignant behavior of lesions. Methods: FNAC was performed on 26 specimens obtained from 25 patients with intraocular, orbital and eyelid tumors and the results were compared...
